I didn't have anything written as I reached, the first of ten speakers, for the microphone. I was standing, bathed in natural light, on the second floor of the Burt's Bees headquarters in Durham, North Carolina, recipient of a check for $10,000.
About halfway through my speech, I dropped the F-Bomb: "All too frequently, when I was pregnant with my first baby, my heart would pound and I couldn't see or breathe and I would feel like I was fucking dying." I spoke from my heart, I spoke the truth of this incredible adventure that has been the building of the Calm-A-Mama brand. And I was met with nodding heads, smiles & tears. Again, the reaffirmation that I was, and am not, alone in the experience of overwhelm that is parenting in this day and age.
There is so much to tell from the time I spent there, but the message that I will hold dear and share with you here is this: We cannot succeed if we are not driven by a deep commitment to our values. Burt's Bees has remained committed to their original goal of natural products and a sustainable company. It shines through everyday in their products and their corporate culture.
