1. Avoid raw fish

If you're pregnant, you may be wondering how to avoid raw fish. The CDC recommends avoiding sushi and other raw seafood during pregnancy because of the risk of foodborne illnesses such as listeria or toxoplasmosis. However, if you can't give up your favorite sushi rolls just yet there are a few precautions that should lessen the risks:  1) Make sure your sushi is cooked thoroughly - this may sound obvious but it's easy to forget! It's also important to note that not all types of cooking will kill microbes so make sure any type of cooking (baking, boiling, frying) reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F for 15 seconds;

2. Stay away from blue-fin tuna and other high mercury

The mercury in tuna and other fish is a concern for pregnant women.  The FDA recommends limiting the amount of canned albacore tuna to no more than 6 ounces each week, and limiting the number of times you eat sushi or raw fish (such as sashimi) to 12 times per month. It's important that you talk with your doctor before making any changes to your diet during pregnancy because they will know what is best for you and your baby.

3. Don't eat unpasteurized dairy products

Dairy products are a major source of calcium, which is essential for healthy teeth and bones. However, you should not consume unpasteurized dairy during pregnancy because it can lead to listeriosis. Listeriosis is an infection that occurs when the bacteria enters your body through contaminated food or water. This bacterium can infect your lungs, brain, spinal cord and blood stream if left untreated.
Pregnant women should avoid eating potentially contaminated foods like raw milk cheese or yogurt as well as undercooked meats or eggs that may be infected with listeriosis-causing bacteria.

4. Stay away from deli meats, hot dogs, smoked seafood or meat

Pregnancy is a time of uncertainty, but there are certain foods that you should absolutely avoid. Deli meats, hot dogs, smoked seafood or meat can cause food-borne illnesses and diseases during pregnancy.  Make sure to read labels on any packaged foods as some may contain deli meats or other animal products which could be a danger to your unborn baby. If you have concerns about the safety of a particular item in your diet, consult with your doctor before eating it again."

5. Avoid alcohol and caffeine

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that women abstain from alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco during pregnancy. This recommendation is to avoid exposure to the risks associated with these substances while pregnant including fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight babies, and stillbirth. Women who have been diagnosed with a clinical depression should also avoid alcohol as it can worsen symptoms of depression.
Women should discuss this information with their obstetrician or other healthcare provider before making any changes in medication or lifestyle decisions.

6. Eat healthy foods - whole grains, fruits and vegetables are good choices for pregnant women
